Pleasant Grove is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Pleasant Grove was John Wesley Hardin in 1821. He and his family were among the first to arrive on what is now known as Main Street in Pleasant Grove. Hardin laid out a grant of land for himself and others near present-day Birmingham on what is now called Spring Avenue. In 1829, he married Anna Patterson and they moved to their grant from Mobile. They had six children: John Wesley (1830-1910), William Hance (1832-1905), Anna (1834-1907), LucyAnn (1836-1920), and Charles Wirtz (1838-1925). In 1835, Hardin erected a cabin on the east side of Spring Avenue where he lived until his death in 1910. He was buried there with his wife and six children under one tree which stands today across from the courthouse steps next to which main street runs. On October 15th, 2005, Mayor Houston announced that the tree would be removed after more than 50 years because it had become an obstruction to traffic flow on Main Street adjacent to City Hall. Pleasant Grove is located on the east bank of the Mobile River and bordered to the north by Vestavia Hills and to the south by Sheffield. Pleasant Grove was founded in 1868 by John Troup and others as a farmstead known as "Hickory Hill". The name Hickory Hill may be derived from a nearby white oak tree which bore nuts during winter. In 1872, Pleasant Grove was platted and named for General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the American Civil War. In 1907, Pleasant Grove became an incorporated community with a post office called "Pleasant Grove". The first settlers of Pleasant Grove were Methodists from Greenville County, South Carolina. until 1868 when they moved west to what is now Calhoun County after buying land from James Folsom Sr.. A Methodist church was organized in 1870 and dedicated on July 8th. The first teacher was Mrs Henson who taught school for one class per day for six weeks before moving on to other teaching positions. Eventually there were twenty-six teachers at Pleasant Grove School before it closed due to lack of students in 1912-13 according to local historian Dr Michael McMahon Reverend Cope also served as pastor of Stonewall Jackson United Methodist Church which stood on Holmes Road opposite present day Gadsden Middle School until 1951 when it burned down because of neglect by its trustees Reverend Horton served as pastor until his death in 1984 . First Baptist Church (1887) Meeting House (1907). As early as 1896 some peach orchards were operated out of homes near where present day Gadsden Middle School stands memories still linger about fresh peach cobbler made fresh daily at home using ice cream scooped off blocks of high quality ice cream while children played outside
