In the early 1800s, Pleasant Grove was a thriving community with many white residents and a few black residents. However, by 1875, most of the white residents had moved away and most of the black residents were either out of state or working as slaves in nearby Tennessee. By 1920 most of the black residents had also left and only a handful remained in town. The community slowly died over time due to economic reasons as well as lack of services and education opportunities for its citizens. However, through hard work and determination by local leaders such as Mayor Tom Smith and City Manager Don Groomsman, Pleasant Grove has begun to succeed in recent years. In 2003-2004 Pleasant Grove completed an ambitious project called "A Journey Home" which aimed to rehabilitate some of the older buildings within town so that they could be used again for housing or businesses purposes; this project cost $8 million dollars and it has since been successful in helping to revive both businesses within town as well as improving access to education for locals living therein.
