Pleasant Grove is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pleasant Grove was laid out by veterans of the American Civil War and their families in 1868. The town was named for General James Denny, who had been killed in action at Monmouth Junction on April 12, 1864. Pleasant Grove grew rapidly during the early years of its establishment; it had a school, post office, Methodist church, two stores and six dwellings by 1886. By 1900 Pleasant Grove had a population of 486 people and thirty-four businesses. During World War II the town built three large munitions factories which created more than 1,200 jobs in the local economy.

By 1938, its population had fallen to just over 100 people and it ceased to be an incorporated municipality. In 1951, Pleasant Grove merged with neighboring Decatur to form the new city of Decatur-Pleasant Grove. In 1978, the city dissolved and all of its residents were placed into two townships: Pleasant Grove Township and Decatur Township. The town of Pleasant Grove is located at 31°25′N 82°06′W / 31.[1]0[2]6[3]9 / -82.[4]5[5]0 ( geographic coordinate). The population of Pleasant Grove as of 2010 was just over 150 people; however it has decreased slightly since then due to various factors including annexation by nearby cities such as Mobile and Huntsville. The only active businesses in town are three churches which house the community’s religious services; one doctor; a library; a few grocery stores; and several modest homesites scattered throughout the largely rural area that surrounds it. The villages which once surrounded Pleasant Grove have all but disappeared from our map since they were annexed by larger municipalities like Mobile or Huntsville after World War II when military bases moved out or were closed down following Korea/China conflict etcetera
