Pleasant Grove is located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Pleasant Grove is a small town with a small school district, and the only shopping center in town is the Pleasant Grove Mall. The town has a few businesses that provide employment for the community, but most of the residents are retirees or people who live close to their families. The first inhabitants of Pleasant Grove were Native Americans. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson made an agreement with them to sell land in what is now Pleasant Grove for £5 per acre. By 1830, there were 8 settlers living in what is now Pleasant Grove. By 1840, there were 12 settlers living in what is now Pleasant Grove. In 1851, the U.S. Government acquired 640 acres from the Indian tribe of Creek Indians and renamed it "Pleasant Grove". The government built a series of stockades around what are now known as Pleasant Grove Farms and on Little Rock Road in order to prevent any further native settlement in that area. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell came through Jefferson County and decided to winter near Athens before moving on to Sherman's army later that year. Heading down Little Rock Road he noticed a farmhouse called "PleasantGrove" which looked like it might be vacant so he stopped to check it out. When he arrived back at his army camp late night he found that some men from Athens had taken over the house and set up shop inside while they waited for orders from Atlanta about where they should go next day. This story may have been related by Lt Col John Beall who served under Ewell during this time period: "Beall reported seeing several tents pitched outside [the house] - these must have been Confederate troops quartered Thereupon I went up-to see if I could determine their purpose or whether they were just passing through on their way home From Corinth." It seems likely that this was not actually Elmwood Manor but rather one of many white houses across town abandoned by its previous occupants due to Civil War occupation (see map below). In 1865 when Mobile Bay fell into Confederate hands following your victory over Union forces at BattleOfPasschendaele, most of Birmingham became part of Confederate Alabama including much of downtown Lovington too So when Union forces burned everything within sight after taking city walls looking for plunder we did tooOne man among many responsible said “We burned all we could find” according A History Of Mobile Bay vol II p419 According To Encyclopedia Brittanica Black people also looted homes throughout war Zone blacks looting whites increased significantly during civil war although experienced lower levels among slaves As historian James Weldon Johnson wrote “There can be no question but Negroes took advantage especially of opportunities given them by circumstances; but such looting cannot be considered as part of general black insurrectionary activity” Johnson op cit pg 282 A study done between 1984 And 1990 showed evidence that grocery stores got looted more frequently then other places during civil unrest however author writes “No systematic attempt has yet been made to measure systematically how often individual stores were looted during riots – Looting rates vary enormously depending upon factors unique to each store – nor do studies allow us any insights into why particular items caught fire or why particular stores received more damage than others” Ibid pg 283 During Reconstruction (1867-1870) following end of Civil War African American males began working side by side Whites so chances are high majority never stole anythingduring Reconstruction years although some did especially targeting whites poorest neighborhoods Today only 2% populate Township Population=1K+ & All Other Residents Retire
