Pleasant Grove is the smallest of the five municipalities in Montgomery County. It surrounds the larger city of Montgomery and has a total area of just 0.92 square miles (2 km²). Pleasant Grove was founded by two men who were farmers on a farm near present-day Pleasant Grove Avenue and South Milton Road. In 1887, John Denton moved to Pleasant Grove from Huntsville with his family and began laying out what would become the community's main street: Milton Road became Pleasant Grove Avenue. The first post office was established in 1898 and remained in operation until it closed in 1962. The name "Pleasant Grove" comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where there are trees." The first settlers arrived during Reconstruction period when many African Americans were brought to Alabama as slaves to work on cotton plantations. Many of these people had no choice but to settle in areasWhere white people wanted them gone so they could continue working their plantation jobs without worry about possible retribution or violence from slaveowners or other whites living nearby. In 1865, General Robert Ewell ordered all black soldiers taken into custody immediately upon their surrender at Appomattox Court House following Confederate victory over the Union army at Gettysburg Battlefield - more than 200,000 black troops surrendered across America that day alone including many Texans - many of whom ended up living within three miles (5 km) of downtown Birmingham where they were used as forced labor for various businesses including Birmingham-Fulton Iron Works which produced cannons for Confederate forces; Mobile Arsenal built artillery pieces; and American Bridge Company built several bridges across Mobile River between Mobile Pointe and New Orleans . . . These forces included numerous free blacks who had also volunteered to serve their country under President Abraham Lincoln's call for Northern troops to fight against southern secessionists who had voted overwhelmingly in favor of slavery rather than follow through with planned military action opposed by Yankee commanders like Ulysses S Grant - one reason why few blacks served militarily during the Civil War despite vast numbers serving overall (). Many African Americans who did serve fought gallantly under general Nathan Bedford Forrest throughout most of the war with few if any reported casualties aside from some minor cuts and bruises sustained while fighting alongside white men – something that continues today among veterans groups such as The United Negro College Fund whose members are disproportionately Black American college graduates/workers

Pleasant Grove was founded in 1821 by General John C. Pike and his wife Eliza. The town was named after a grove of trees near the Pike family's home on the east side of town. Pleasant Grove grew quickly, and in 1827 it had a population of 350 people. In 1829, Pleasant Grove became the first town in Alabama to be chartered as a county seat. The name changed to Montgomery in1835, but the original town continued to be known as Pleasant Grove until it merged with Montrose County in 1907.
