Pleasant Grove is a small town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,548 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach metropolitan area. The first firearms were muzzleloaders and pistols made by local blacksmiths in the early 1800s. Ammunition was also scarce at that time so many guns were simply left unloaded and unsecured on the streets or in lockups until 1825 when one white manRegistered arms dealer named Hargrave developed a system to fix this problem by stocking ammunition at his store. This allowed farmers and other outdoor shooters to reliably shoot game with impunity during frontier days before firearms became common knowledge and regulation outlawed such practices. In 1847, Pleasant Grove's post office was established and soon began receiving mail from all over Alabama including Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Huntsville (until1869), Decatur (until1881), Tuscaloosa (until1885), Selma (from 1887 until1911) and Birmingham (from 1913 until 1975). In 1868 Captain John Witherspoon of Company A Ulysses S. Grant's 2d Regiment engaged Confederate General Pemberton near Mobile Bayou in an attempt to relieve that city after its capture by Union forces under Sherman on May 12thosterday; Witherspoon killed both Pemberton and his horseman aide while taking cover behind some trees east of town; this action helped reduce Confederate strength within 350 miles of Petersburg thereby enabling Union troops under General Lee to march into Richmond on April 9th 1865 Thus Negroes throughout America came into contact with their first firearm ever - a musket-and they generally enjoyed shooting it as much as their white cousins did! Pleasant Grove is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The first settlers in Pleasant Grove were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived in 1817. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and named it Pleasant Grove after their church, which was located in Athens, Georgia. In 1819, John Kirby founded Kirby's Mill and became one of the early leaders of the cotton industry in Alabama. He also developed what is now known as Kirby's Corner Store on Main Street. In 1825, he married Olga Hightower and started to sell produce from his mill at what is now known as Harrison Road and Green Lake Drive. In 1830, Pleasant Grove moved to its present location on land that had been donated by General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The community charter was granted on May 15, 1830 by Judge James Fenton with intent "to laid out a village for themselves" within three miles (5 km) of Tuscaloosa by way of improved roads and an armory/cotton gin/grains store." By 1840, there were six homes in Pleasant Grove; four were rented out while two were used as schools and a hotel called 'The Prairie' (later renamed 'Pleasant Grove Hotel'). A post office was established here in 1840 with George Witherspoon as first mail carrier (the first outside Tuscaloosa). During the American Civil War (1861-1865), several skirmishes occurred near Pleasant Grove between Union forces under Brigadier General Edwin MeeksCleburne and Confederate troops under General Jubal Early; some residents may have sheltered Confederate soldiers during these engagements. In 1865, when Mobile Bay fell to Union forces following battle at New Market Creek Bridge over Mobile River, most residents chose to relocate to Mobile rather than fight for Confederate President Andrew Johnson.(Some later returned). On November 5th 1865 Jupiter Moorehead shot an unknown person fleeing arrest near Cedar Hill Church after being told he would be hanged if caught; this incident led to increased law enforcement activity around Pleasant Grove during Reconstruction days.(Moorehead remains an unsolved mystery today) After Reconstruction ended in April 1865 due mainly to violence committed by Ulysses S Grant's administration against civil rights abuses across America,[1][2] many businesses closed or changed hands including Kirby's Corner Store which continued operations until 1978 when it went out of business again due largely to difficulty finding customers inside rural Alabama towns during this time period (−30% since 1950). By 1880 there remained only five homes remaining within the town limits while most people had either relocated away or died young because North Alabama gold mines production declined rapidly during this time period (−60% since 1850).[3] A post office operated here from 1880 until 1907 but no mail ever reached Pleasant Grove.[4] A fire destroyed much of downtown Tuscaloosa on February 17th 1904[5][6] causing great financial hardship for many residents who lost their businesses; however local historian Dr Edward Jones attributes this fire moreso to arson than any other factor([7]) . On October 30th 1908 two automobiles collided head-on into each other along US 41 just north of Dyersburg; both drivers lost control and crashed into a house killing both occupants[8]; this event led authorities close down all lanes leading from US 41 southbound through Pleasuregrove until December 8th 1958 when they reopened them();[9][10][11][12] resulting back then still being one of longest closures per vehicle type observed anywhere in America up until then (-100% since 1950).[13][14] One possible reason behind such long shutdown periods could be attributed then towards poor driving habits among drivers during these years − rates have generally decreased significantly sinceafter− despite continuing growth throughout recent decades (+300% since 1990)[15]. This has likely been attributed then mainly towards lower alcohol prices making those living within similar sized towns less tempted thereforeforth to take risks when travelling outside their communities even though such travel rates have noticably increased overall (+50%) recently nonetheless

In 1829, John Pritchett bought land in Pleasant Grove from James Barkley and began to build a house on it which he called "Pleasant Grove Plantation". Pritchett's heirs continued to operate the plantation until 1896 when it passed into the hands of their daughter-in-law, Mabel Boone Pritchett Henry. In 1857, Jered Henson purchased part of the Pleasant Grove Plantation from Mabel Boone PritchettHenry for $2,000 cash. He had married her sister Mable Cooke Henson four years earlier. With this purchase, Jered became manager of the plantation with authority over all its subtenants or slaves. Henson used his power to improve living conditions for his workers and promote farming practices that would later be adopted by other farmers throughout the region. In 1865, an act known as the "National Black Codes" were passed by Congress following Reconstruction (1861–1865). These laws aimedto control black labor through regulations such as working hours, hiring quotas, maximum wages/salaries etc.. This led to increased tensions between white farmworkers and black agricultural workers in America during this period; however, few events took place within Pleasant Grove itself as a result of these tensions

Pleasant Grove was established in 1819 by settlers from Randolph County, Virginia. The city was named for Pleasant Hill Chapel, a Presbyterian church in nearby Decatur. In 1830, the town had a population of 100 and was known as the "Second Town." The cotton gin and textile mills became popular here in the early 20th century and led to periodic economic decline. However, over time Pleasant Grove has regained its former prosperity thanks to its strong community spirit and access to quality education.
