In 1871, three white men - John H., James W., and Michael Averett - bought 8 acres of land east of Mobile Creek where they began to build homes Suburban style with two stories each so that more families could live together without fear of being segregated or lynched on account of their color or race while still enjoying basic civil rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution which protected all Americans regardless of race or religion if they resided within certain limits specified by Congress under Section 3 known as "the Fourteenth Amendment". In 1880-81 some new settlers moved into this area from Vestavia Hills outside Birmingham and began building log cabins called "Ridgecrest" which are still standing today next door to Municipal Park across US 49 from where US 41 crosses Mobile creek (and remain visible from Interstate 5). The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. The site where Pleasant Grove now stands was first settled in 1819 by Methodist missionaries from Illinois. The name "Pleasant Grove" was given to the settlement by General James Hinton because it seemed like apleasant place to live after spending time travelling through many different parts of America. In 1828, Pleasant Grove became part of Huntsville County and changed its name to Cottonwood Springs when its post office opened. The settlers in this area were farmers who grew cotton and other crops. They also built some homes using logs that they salvaged from nearby rivers. By 1830, Pleasant Grove had a school and two stores. In 1840, the community added another store, church and residences when land was donated by John Sisler for this purpose. In 1868, Pleasant Grove moved from its location on the east bank of the Mobile River to what is now its current location on the west bank because water levels in that river were rising too high for farming purposes. At that time, most people lived near their farms so they could get to work quickly if there was an emergency such as floods or crop failure; however, today's residents live primarily within walking distance of their local grocery store or library system
