Pleasant Grove is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Pleasant Grove were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. A post office was established here in 1827, and by 1830 there were six residents living in Pleasant Grove. By 1840, there were ten people living here. At that time, Pleasant Grove was part of Marshall County and had its own courthouse and jail. In 1852,due to an increase in population and land prices being offered for sale in Marshall County, a new courthouse was built on Clearwater Road for $6,000. The first mayor of Pleasant Grove was James Sayers Jr.. In 1906 a sawmill was built on Mill Creek by Hosea Witherspoon & Son Limited and named after his father-in-law Major General Amos Hill Witherspoon (1802-1887). That mill produced lumber until it closed down around 1957 because of competition from newer mills near Interstate 10. The present day town of Pleasant Grove began as a result of an effort led by Reuben Miller to form a agricultural society called "The Agricultural Society" which met at various locations throughout Marshall County during 1884-85 to discuss ways to improve agriculture products available for sale within our county boundaries. This society accomplished some important things such as creating roads so that goods could be transported easily between settlements and providing support for local school districts which were struggling financially during this period; however these efforts failed because lack of money prevented anyone from implementing their ideas into law or policy. Pleasant Grove was founded in 1836 by the Rev. David Dudley and his wife, Harriett. The village was named for Pleasant Hill, one of three plantations that Duffield owned in Mobile County. In 1838, the Dudley's built a log cabin on their plantation to serve as a model for other settlers in the area. In 1850, the first school was built in Pleasant Grove. By 1860, there were four schools in Pleasant Grove and over 100 residents. The community experienced growth during the Civil War with attacks on Confederate forces from local residents and businesses. A military hospital was constructed near the village during the war and many civilians lost their lives due to surgical procedures at the hospital. After the war, peace returned to Pleasant Grove until 1861 when a fire destroyed most of the Village center.
