Phenix City is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,752 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The city was founded by Scotsmen in 1819 as a trading post on the Red River. In 1828, it became the county seat of Tuscaloosa County after that county was formed from parts of Covington and Tuskegee counties. Phenix City's growth reflected its location at the crossroads of several important transportation routes: The Bypass road led to Mobile and Huntsville; the rail line led to Chattanooga and Atlanta; and Route 66 connected Phenix City with Decatur, Alabama, west of Montgomery. In 1927, Phenix City (along with other towns in Tuscaloosa County) passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination on the basis of race in all public accommodations or businesses. The ordinance remains in effect today. Today, Phenix City offers an interesting mix of cultures: English speakers make up over 60% of its population; Russians make up about 10%; Germans form about 8%, along with sizable numbers from Southern Italy and Latin America who have settled here since World War II. African Americans make up about 1/3rd of the population overall but account for almost all black business owners and employees within city limits (though many residents commute to nearby Birmingham). There are also sizable numbers of Asian American residents as well as Hispanics (mostly Mexican) who operate their own businesses near downtown where they enjoy some degreescale political representation.

Phenix City, Alabama is a small town located in the state of Alabama. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Phenix City was Captain John Smith on December 14, 1733. He named it after his native Georgia's creek, Xalapa orpheni (pronounced "xah-lah-puh-nuh"). When Englishman James Robertson discovered Mobile Bay in 1802 and came ashore at Pascagoula on January 12th, he called out "Xalapa!" from his ship Liberty and it stuck in people's memory for centuries thereafter. Today, there are few if any physical reminders of this early era of Phenix City history other than a single public square with a statue commemorating Captain John Smith and James Robertson. However, oral histories and artifacts tell an interesting story about this period in Phenix City's history. One account tells of how a young girl named Nancy was playing near the bay when she saw four large white sails Jones had built to take advantage of the newly discovered oil resources offshore Mobile Bay. She ran home to her parents to tell them what she had seen; they decided then and there that they would build their own wharf hereabouts and name their new town after one of America's most famous navigators - Captains John Smith (the father) and James Robertson (the son). The maiden name given to this new community by its founders should have been something like "Jones". Unfortunately for everyone involved - especially Nancy - but fortunately for us all some time later someone else added an extra letter to that already long list: A! So we now know as Phenix City! A group of local men went into business together as Merchants Tailors & seamen (MT&S). This group helped start up many businesses throughout central Alabama during the 1800s including brickmaking, farming, timbering and mining ventures which resulted in much wealth being amassed for both individuals and communities alike. One such venture led to Joe Ladd becoming one of only five salesmen ever prosecuted under US antitrust laws while working for Montgomery County merchants Jno Henson & Co., Ltd., selling goods door-to-door throughout south central Alabama during the late 19th century! During World War II more than 100 African Americans worked on munitions plants in nearby Huntsville earning $2 per day! Many residents volunteered their time firefighter/EMD personnel during the devastating fires which struck downtown Birmingham in November 1990; these flames destroyed approximately 60% of downtown fabricating over 150 buildings losing irreplaceable Artifacts along with nearly 2 thousand jobs! Some locals even took up arms against vandals who repeatedly desecrated churches as recently as 2003!. In recent years several members from prominent families closed down local businesses including two physicians who reopened a medical office adjacent to their home after being forced by court order not do so due to health concerns brought on by lackadaisical government officials!!! What started off as petty squabbles among numerous interested parties has ended up spawning multiple museums within walking distance all detailing various aspects connected with early phenix city history...well hello again!!

The town was named after a Shawnee Indian chief who had been killed in battle six years earlier. Phenix City became a major center for cotton production during the early 1800s, thanks to its fertile soil and natural resources. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Phenix City was burned by Union troops as part of the army's " Burning of Atlanta."
