Phenix City is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Phenix City was founded in 1871 by James Waddell and his brothers. The area around Phenix City was first inhabited by the Creek people. The city's name comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place where water falls." In 1881, Waddell bought land in what is now Phenix City from John Laughlin and began to build a sawmill there. He named his mill Phenix City Saw Company afterphenix Falls on Mobile Bay, which he also built into a hotel. In 1907, when Waddell died, his son-in-law James Fenton took over management of the company and changed its name to American Saw Company. American Saw Company became one of the leading lumber companies in Alabama before going bankrupt in 1922. In 1930, the Consolidated Coal Corporation acquired American Saw Company and continued to operate it as part of their coal business until its bankruptcy in 1984. Afteroral Plant No 1 (now known as White Sands) was built near Phenix City in 1935 by JPL Steel Products Inc., one of America's largest steel producers at that time; this plant helped create jobs for locals during World War II. White Sands closed down in 1974 but its impact on local economy has been difficult to forget: it manufactured more than 10% of all aluminum products used within Alabama during that time period alone! Today only portions of old White Sands are still standing; however remnants from other buildings can be seen scattered around town today including an old movie theater complete with internal set pieces and costumes! Supreme Court - Located on 5th Avenue Northwest across from State Capitol building sits one helluva courthouse considering day-to-day operations take place out front under Judges Hill & Young...it's no wonder so many successful lawyers call this place home ;) Renaissance Ballroom - Opened back in 1903 by Judge Harry Hargrave opposite US Courthouse), One purpose it served aside form hosting dances/ functions etc outside massive ballrooms like Cotton Club were held indoors until recently...It currently houses several restaurants/bars inside modern architecture designed office district called Pinnacle Tower condos situated directly across street along with 2 large new shopping malls nearby!: Meridian Mall anchored by Sears supercenter & MCDougal’s department store anchor mall will join Pinnacle Tower condo development soon!!
