In 1820 Englishman John Smith discovered new land to the south and west of Mobile Bay when he sailed upriver from Pensacola Harbor and anchored offthroat Point on December 14, 1820. He named this new land "Phenix City" after his friend General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia (near which Smith had landed). In 1830, Robert Ewing bought 640 acres (253 hectares) north and east of downtown from Captain John Pemberton for $2 per acre or $2 per month rent (). In 1840, Ewing donated an additional 840 acres (291 hectares) to Coosa Indian Nation for their reservation near present day Decatur Street/Cumberland Avenue ()in downtown Phenix City (). In 1865 cotton grower John Troup established a small plantation southeast of downtown on what is now Troup Road (). By 1870 Troup's operation covered 1,100 acres (), including 300 feet (.89 metres) deep (12 m) bituminous coal seams known as Noonsocket Coal Field (). When natural gas became available in 1901, some residents developed dummy pipelines to service their fields with compressed air rather than water; however, most residents continued using water until 1923 when natural gas became more common and Litton Petroleum began operations directly beneath downtown streets (). Many industrial pioneers who founded businesses within today's boundaries were also ancestors who lived or worked here during earlier eras: J C Hickson opened his first grocery store here in 1903 (); H Mitchell & Son built its first factory here; Griggs & Gibbs started production at their original phenolic paper mill here; Allis Chalmers produced vehicles starting with Model Ts here; etching company Alcoa began making steel products here early in the 20th century.; among many others
