During this time period, many Native Americans migrated into what is now Baldwin County after fleeing British forces occupying their lands at the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775. Many of these people settled in what is nowphenix city due to its strategic location on the Tennessee River and access to transportation arteries such as the road system that was developing at that time. The first European settler in phenix city was John Denton who arrived in 1868. Denton had come from Huntsville, Alabama which was then part of Lowndes County. He purchased land east of downtown phenixcity from local Indian leaders for $1 per acre (about £0.27 per square mile). Over time, other settlers followed suit and by 1881 there were more than 60 families living within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of downtown phenixcity proper. During this time period there were several factors contributing tophenix city's rapid growth including: 1) access to railroad transportation; 2) easy availability of inputs such as coal, iron ore and oil; 3) development around downtownphenixcity; 4) generous government policies favoring agricultural development
Phenix City was founded by Major General James H. Wilkinson on October 3, 1853 as the town of Phenix City Landing. The name, which is Cherokee for "place where the water comes out clear," was chosen to honor General Wilkinson's victory in the Alamo War. The town grew rapidly and soon became a important center of cotton production in Alabama. The city was renamed Phenix City in1892 after being designated as an international airport.
