He also founded an academy there which would become Auburn Academy when it opened its doors on October 6th, 1851 In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to cross the Tennessee River into Union territory and march southward towards Mobile Bay so as not to put off any British or Confederate forces that might be guarding that area On November 4th General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched out from Chattanooga along Chickamauga Ridge towards Union lines but found them unguarded and retreated back inside their lines after being repulsed four times Furst then turned around and marched eastwards through central Georgia towards Lookout Mountain where he planned on making another attempt at crossing into Union territory On December 31st while Forrest was withinUnion lines looking for a crossing point he discovered an open field about six miles due north of where he had been planning his attack

Phenix City is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Phenix City is known for its Historic District and downtown area. The town was founded by white settlers in 1824 as a small community on the north bank of the Mill Creek named after General James Pease's daughter, Phenix City Plantation (now part of Mobile). The first post office was established in 1827 and the first physician was Dr. John Hinson from Phenix City. In 1829 two brothers named Alexander and Isaac Smith started a gristmill on Mill Creek which became one of the most important commercial attractions in early Phenix City. In 1830 Alexander Smith died leaving his mill to his brother Isaac who continued it until 1865 when it passed into ownership of Jeptha Sells Cooley which sold it to Wm A Henderson in 1922. After World War II it reverted back to private hands until 1984 when it again passed through public ownership becoming part of Montgomery County Parks system under an agreement between Montgomery County Councilmember Gerald Covington and then-Montgomery County Superintendent John Lynn after they both served on county boards related to parks development during that period. In 2002, with funding from the Alabama Legislature, Montgomery County Parks created a new historical district around downtownphenixcity which incorporated many contributing properties from five separate historic districts located within city limits: Canadian Avenue Historic District (1824-1901), First Baptist Church (1849), Jackson Street Addition/Old Courthouse Annex (1860s-1920s), Old Court House Annex/Jackson Street property (1930s-1950s)and Second Presbyterian Church/Old Courthouse Annex (1930s).
