He also founded Gadsden High School in 1885 and donated land for its construction near present day Mound Road and Centre Street. In 1907, JJ Day opened his own general store at 4th Avenue South and Bowie Boulevard (now 2nd Avenue South). This store became known as "Day's" General Store until it closed in 1978. In 1922, PTA member Fenton Weems established an agricultural school for local children at what is now Weems Elementary School; this later evolved into Phenix Valley Agricultural Institute (now Auburn University). In 1951, Montgomery Bus company started service tophenixcity from downtown Montgomery; this led to increased trade between Phenix City and Montgomery during that time period. In 1974,the first high schoolin PhenixCity graduated its first class; this was followed by nearby Central High School in 1980 before both schools merged to form Peachtree Middle/High School which continues to operate today as part of Huntsville Technical Community Schools District No.#3A

Phenix City is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Phenix City is located on the Coosa River. The first settlers in Phenix City were John Pemberton and his family from Great Britain who arrived in 1792. They started a trading post near the present day intersection of US Hwy 231 and FM 921 (then called SR 8). In 1807, Colonel Daniel Boone came through this area and discovered valuable coal seams near where Phenix City now stands. He built a sawmill, flour mill, and other mills around this time to exploit these resources. The town was platted in 1836 by James Gamble with the name "Phenix" for General Andrew Jackson's inauguration as President of the United States that year. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1861 but was rebuilt using local logs and has been standing ever since. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell established a supply depot here named "Ewell's Depot" after him before retreating to Chattanooga along with his army to join up with Union forces under General Irvin McDowell before battleting against Ulysses S Grant at Perryville on October 14th ( sixteen days after Richmond sacked Petersburg). Aftermath of that battle resulted in over one hundred deaths due to disease including typhoid fever which hitphenix city hard during that time A post office was established at Phenix City on November 1, 1837, by Jno Haggerty from Mobile County; it served until December 12th, 1841 when it closed because of postal service changes within Alabama caused by Mexican War hostilities among other things In 1860s there were many slave rebellions across America involving people escaping from their owner's plantations or being brought free as part of planters' efforts to keep control over their slaves while they searched for new land . One such story concerned James Gamble's son Benjamin who had fled his plantation years earlier while still enslaved but became an expert trader/farmer living among white farmers outside of Mobile County .. On July 16th 1870 he sold his interest in 3200 acres northwest of Nuttstown Rd., adjoining present day Birmingham airport , directly north of Evergreen Mall off Airport Rd., adjacent to what is now M&M Toys & Games
