Phenix City, Alabama is a city in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. The area of Phenix City was 1,811.1 square miles (3,595.5 km²). It is the county seat and largest city in Escambia County. The land that now makes up Phenix City was first settled by the Creek people in the 17th century. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Alabama and destroyed most of Creek culture and villages including Phenix City; this event is also known as the Battle of Mobile Bay. The town was founded by James Lunsford in 1835 as a wagon manufacturing center for Navigation Company traders travelling between Pensacola and New Orleans via Mobile Bay. In 1840, steamboats began arriving from Tennessee to load cotton on boats bound for Memphis and Nashville;phenixcity became an important stop on these trips. In 1865, Confederate general Robert Ewell decided to move his headquarters south of Montgomery toMobile because he thought it would be easier to launch attacks against Union forces here than nearer Montgomery or Atlanta; Mobile soon fell to Union forces under Sherman during the Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, many frontier farmers moved into central Alabama; among them were James Lunsford and his son-in-law John Boren who founded Bryant Manufacturing Company in 1880 which manufactured bicycles and clothing until World War II

By 1860, Phenix City had become an important cotton-growing center due to its location on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. During World War II, Phenix City was one of several military communities built near Mobile Bay to support naval forces fighting in Southeast Asia. After the war, much of the community declined because of economic decline and a lack of new development opportunities. However, some businesses re-opened and construction started on a new courthouse and school in downtown Phenix City in 1984. Today, many residents continue to live in older buildings Downtown while young families have moved into newer neighborhoods around town.
On November 3, 1871, Phenix City was founded by General John C. Shelby as the capital of Alabama. It officially became a city on July 1, 1881. The city's population at the time was only 2,500 people. In 1902, the U.S. Steel Corporation established a steel mill in Phenix City and began to produce iron and other materials for shipbuilding and other industrial purposes. The city's population quadrupled to 10,000 people by 1912 and reached 30,000 by 1928. During World War II, Phenix City played an important role in munitions production due to its proximity to the Birmingham Arsenal and its access to transportation resources such as railways and rivers.
