However, after public outcry and protestations from many local businesses who felt their livelihoods would be impacted if their buildings were destroyed along with 3200 residents who lived in or around downtownphenixcity voted overwhelmingly against demolition - resulting in Ladd reneging on his promise A proposal was made to rename downtown phenixcity after educator Dr. Ben Hill instead - however this plan also met with strong opposition from many local businesses who felt they had been wronged before Since thenphenixcity has slowly started recovering - seeing modest economic growth through tourism until recently when joblessness began creeping back into the community again
