Phenix City was founded in 1881 by the merger of two other towns, Stonington and Uniontown. The original name for the town was "Uniontown", but because it coincided with nearby Muscle Shoals, many people in Phenix City changed their name to match that of the city. The first post office was established in 1881 and the first mayor was Wm. H. Whitehurst. In 1906 construction began on a dam which would later become known as Lake Pontchartrain and formed portion of what is now Baton Rouge Parish. The early years were difficult forphenixcity after being forced to leave its previous home due to increased flooding from the Black Warrior River during storms such as those caused by Hurricane Fayette in 1886 or 1888. Phenix City was established in 1819 as a small town in the Mobile region of Alabama. The town grew quickly, and by 1838 it had reached its present size. In that year, the US Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which ordered all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River to leave their homes and head west into what would become Texas. Many of the Phenix City residents decided to move, and by 1840 most of the town had been abandoned. However, some residents stayed behind and began to create a new community called Phenix City Hall. They did this because they wanted to continue using the same name for their new town despite being located far away from any other settlement in Alabama. The first post office was opened in Phenix City Hall on March 6, 1840. The city continued growing rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks in part to its location within easy reach of both Mobile and Montgomery County (the laterAlabama). By 1870phenixcity had reached its current size with a population of over 10,000 people. There were also many businesses located within the city limits, including several newspapers and several banks.
