The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee called for an all-out battle against Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. On July 4th, 1861, Confederates surrendered at Appomattox Court House after two years of fighting; however, many residents chose to stay behind and fight against Union forces until they were forced to evacuate by Union troops on September 15th 1865 due to Confederate capture of Montgomery two days earlier
