As a result of this decision, many local citizens became refugees or fugitives and some ofphenix city's original buildings were razed by retreating Confederates). Afterward, most ofthe remainingdaily trade took place withinFort Sumter's wallsrather then outside., leaving development ofphenixcity solely within its boundaries since 1861 until 1957 when Interstate 20 bypassed it completely givingphenixcity essentially no connection whatsoever with other parts of Alabama other than occasional brief visits by Interstate 10 drivers passing through Montgomery Airport (the only major airport in central Alabama)
