The company manufactured rifles and shotguns in Phenix City and neighboring Decatur County. In 1912, P.E.M. merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRAC). WRAC became the largest manufacturer of firearms in the world and continued to produce rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition, and other products until it was purchased by Remington Rand Corporation in 1988.

On December 4, 1861, it became the site of one of the first battles in the American Civil War when Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory and ended Grant's campaign to capture Knoxville, Tennessee. The town was founded in 1875 by James Mclntyre and others as an agricultural center on land donated by John Pemberton. In 1896 it became a city and now has a population of over 2,000 people who are largely employed in manufacturing or services associated with those industries; although some small businesses remain scattered throughout the downtown area.[1] It is also home to several colleges and universities including Alcorn State University (a Baptist school),[2][3][4] Tuskegee A&M University,[5][6] Northwest Alabama Community College,[7] and Phenix City-Meridian Community College/Alabama State Technical Institute.[8] Phenix City is known for its annual Christmas parade which features more than 100 floats and marching bands from throughout central Alabama as well as from other parts of America along with comments from Santa Claus himself on each float while onlookers line up to snap pictures or buy presents for their families during what can be an event that attracts hundreds of participants each year according to city officials.[9][10]
