Phenix City is named for one of its main streets, Phenix Avenue. The first permanent settler in Phenix City was John Nicholson who arrived in 1836 and erected a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. In 1839 he sold his land to James Witherspoon and family for $675 dollars which formed the basis of the town's economy until after World War II when cotton became more important in local commerce. In 1865 General Sherman set up his command post at Fort Gibson near present-day Phenix City to organize and train Union troops during the Civil War. A few weeks later General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved into nearby Cullman to take advantage of Sherman's move westward. Forrest soon realized that he needed an oxcart road from Mobile to enter into Shelby County so he built one himself and called it "Forrest Road." In 1868 new residents Isaac Coxe and George Stephenson donated land east of downtown for a public school which opened in 1870 under teacher Mrs. Sallie Hardwick Burroughs (later Mrs. George Stephenson). The first mayor of Phenix City was Jno Higgs (1894-1900). In 1907 Judge Tryon Fenton became Mayor when Mayor Harry Tilton resigned due to illness; Fenton served 4 years before being impeached by Republican Party members on grounds that he hadTammany Hall connections while serving as mayor A gas station started open by Corner Gas Supply Co., Ltd., also known as "Gaslight" on Main Street north of downtown replaced gasoline rationing during World War II with a system where citizens could purchase blocks of unleaded gasoline at specific booths Phenix City also played host to America's only car show exhibition event – the Henry Ford International Speedway Experimental Race Course Show – from 1951-1955; this event drew top motorsports drivers from all over America including Stirling Moss

The black families who founded Phenix City were very poor and had to work hard to get by. However, they did not give up on their dreams of becoming successful. The first store in Phenix City was run by Mrs. Bigham and her husband John. They sold goods from their home and also made repairs on vehicles. Mr. Bigham's son, James Bigham, ran the store until 1912 when he died suddenly at age 44 years old. His widow continued running the store until her death in 1933. In 1892, a post office was established in Phenix City with Gertrude Aiken as the first Postmistress. She served until 1935 when she resigned because she could not raise enough money to keep the business running without help from the government! In 1925,phenixcityseparate School District No 2was organized which included all of south central Alabama! It operated until 1967 when it merged into Huntsville public school district! In 1984,the state legislature passed a resolution recognizing phenixcityas an historical community! Today, Phenix City is still a thriving community with many businesses and residents who continue making pilgrimages to its namesake tree for sustenance or just some company during these tough times!
