It is the largest city in Butler County and is also one of two cities in Butler County (the other being Decatur) that were both established as coal towns during the early 20th century. The first people to arrive in what is now Phenix City were Creekside Indians who built homes and hunted game near present-day downtown. The town began as a small community of about fifty residents called Clarksville when railroad construction began nearby in 1881. Clarksville grew rapidly due to new transportation options and increased trade with neighboring Mobile and Huntsville. By 1902,phenixcity had an estimated 2,500 residents; however, by 1910 it had grown to over 10,000 residents due to waves of immigrants arriving from Europe for work on the various railways throughout America during that decade: Italians, Poles, Greeks (many of whom had become naturalized Americans), Irishmen, Germans and others. During World War I*, phenixcity became known as "The Arsenal" due to its proximity to DuPont chemical works* which were conducting research on chemical weapons*. In 1853, Austrian scientist Johann Karl Friedrich Gauss developed what is now considered the first practical digital image sensor from simple light cells contained withinbinoculars and other optical instruments such as telescopes and microscopes during his work on Gaussian optics theory. His discovery helped make photography possible by allowing imagesynthesis from light rather than conversion into pictures formed from colors alone (as earlier methods did).
