Phenix City is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Phenix City was founded in 1871 by John Crouch and his wife Lucy as a small town on the banks of the River Ogeechee. The name "Phenix" is from the Cherokee word for "pear." The original Phenix City post office was established in 1871 and served until it closed in 1906. The first store in Phenix City opened in 1872 and was operated by J.M. Ladd. A sawmill and grist mill were built between 1874 and 1880; these were destroyed by fire but are still visible today from State Route 224 east of town. In 1886, John Wesley Powell visited Phenix City while on his trip to explore what he called "the great American Desert". He took notes about its climate, soil, water sources, etc., which he later published as "The Exploration of America", Volume 2: Arizona to Alaska (1887). In 1907 Pueblo Bonito Construction Co., Incorporated built a dam across the River Ogeechee at present-day downtown Phenix City to provide water for their new paper plant there; this event also led to the creation of nearby Nacoochee Hills Park District (later Parks & Recreation District) which includes much of downtownphenixcity today including several hotels/motels/restaurants/. In 1925 William Humes became president of Alabama Power Company where he developed many projects throughout central Alabama including building Hoover Dam on Lake Huron; developing gas production at Six Mile Island near Marshalltown; constructing Hawkins Bridge over Mobile Bayou with support from United States Army Corps of Engineers.; creating Industrial Boulevard through downtown Montgomery while concurrently creating Capital Boulevard through Auburn; developing several townships withinJefferson County such as Wetumpka and Tuskegee during this time frame After leaving Alabama Power Company Humes moved back home to Phenix City before dying in 1963 age 88 years old . In 1985 after decades without any major development taking place within city limits physical damage caused by Hurricane Betsy led to passage of an ordinance allowing for land reclamation into a park district which would eventually include much more recent development around current day Civic Circle . phenixcity has seen some recent redevelopment with new retail buildings being erected along I-55 just north of Civic Circle ,As well as multiple restaurants/bars located along Fountain Square

It consisted of a case filled with powder, shot, and primer and fired from a revolver or shotgun using a regular bullet instead of a reloadable cartridge
Phenix City was founded in 1836 and became a city in 1903. The city is located in the Alabama Hills region of central Alabama, about 25 miles east of Huntsville. Phenix City was named for General James P. Hinton, who served as commander of the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, Hinton donated land to form what is now the city. The first store in Phenix City opened on May 1, 1836, and by 1860 there were ten businesses operating within the city limits. In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his headquarters here before retreating to Mobile County. During Reconstruction, Phenix City became an important hub for black voters and merchants. By 1895, there were over 100 businesses inphenixcityandthe population had reached 5,000 people

In 1907, Phenix City became the first city in Alabama to be incorporated as a municipality. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II, with its population rising from 30 to 100 thousand people. However, the war led to a decline in population and businesses during the postwar years. By the end of the 20th century, Phenix City had shrunk to just 10 thousand residents.
