This rifle became known as the Pell City Pistol and was used by the city's sheriff and other law enforcement officers. In 1903, Pelican Creek Rifle Club president Julius Breen formed the Pelican Creek Pistol Company to manufacture pistols using the 8mm Remington cartridge. For many years this company produced pistols under three different names: The American Eagle (1903-1906), The Kentucky Avenger (1907-1908) and The Texas Ranger (1909-1920). The first handgun drawn by Alabama state troopers was an FN Model 1909 revolver called "The Trooper." This firearm was designed by George Washington Bailey and manufactured by Iver Johnson Arms Company of Wichita Falls, Texas. It had a 3½” barrel with a 5 round capacity magazine and was chambered for .45 ACP ammunition. trooper revolvers were first fielded during World War I when United States military forces began arming civilians throughout Europe with guns specific to their country's needs; these guns were designated as service revolvers or pistol arms for civilian use
