Pell City, Alabama, is a community of over 120,000 people located in the heart of the Black Belt region of south Alabama. The city was founded in 1881 by Englishman George Pell and his wife Fannie Custis. Pell City has been called "the cultural and economic center of the Black Belt" for its contributions to African American culture and education. Today, Pell City is known for its shopping district, nightlife, and many cultural attractions. In 1912, George Pell established what would become Pell City's first high school. In 1929, the city's first hospital was opened in downtown Pell City by Dr. John Huggins with support from local citizens. In 1956, the city name was changed to "Pell City" after George Pells grandson Edward Biddle Pell. Many famous people have lived or worked in or near Pell City including segregationist Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and civil rights leader Revlon Coleman!

The Pell City, Alabama area was first settled in 1819 by the sons of a white man and his black woman. In 1826, General James Wilkinson built the first cotton gin in this area. The town's name derived from John Pell, one of Wilkinson's assistants on the project. By 1830, Pell City had a population of 350 residents and developed into a small agricultural community. In 1836, Cottonseed Oil Company founder Andrew Mellon donated land for the town to be laid out as it is today. In 1850, the Confederate States Army burned down part of the town during its attempt to seize control of Mobile Bay. The resulting fire destroyed many homes and businesses in Pell City. After Mobile was recaptured by Union forces in 1865, most of Pell City's buildings were abandoned and remain standing today as evidence of its early growth and significance.

Pell City was founded in 1871 by James M. Pell and his family when he purchased 2,500 acres (1 km2) of land from the Creek Nation for $4 per acre ($27 per hectare). The name "Pell City" comes from James M.'s father-in-law's nickname for him: "the Elder Statesman". In 1881, James Mellon donated 3 acres (1 km2) to the town to help it become self-sufficient and began developing the community into an agricultural center with mills, a store and churches. By 1907, Pell City had a population of 750 residents and two cotton gin plants producing 100 bales of cotton each day. During World War I (1914-1918), Pell City became known as one of the most important military supply points in southern Alabama due to its location on Interstate 15 near Montgomery and its access to food supplies brought by truckloads from across the state. In 1933, JB Peacock started up what would become one ofAlabama's leading poultry companies with his new plant in PellCity – now known as Peacock Farms Incorporated – which produced more than 1 million eggs annually until its closure in 1986 adjacent to Schroeder Airport after multiple fires destroyed valuable barns throughout their property housing thousands of hens that laid golden eggs for America’s favorite breakfast cereal! The city also hosted annual chicken shows beginning in 1930 which attracted exhibitors from all over North America including some very famous names such as Roy Rogers who came to show off his latest stock operation! After years of continuous growth during both World Wars II (1939-1945) through increased production due to advances in technology such as mechanization; essential ingredients like feed corn became available at much lower prices making hogs cheaper then ever before; egg production reached levels never before seen; buildings were erected specifically for this purpose; schools were built here because there wasn't anything else close enough - especially since many farmers didn't have either space or money to move their operations outside during these times! In 1957 when Interstate 65 was completed through much farmland now within downtown PellCity limits; electrical hookups became available right next door so businesses could start using electricity instead of running generators days/weeks/months/years old just long enough to produce some heat on top - something that had been needed increasingly during these slow times! Post WWII growth stopped abruptly due mainly to droughts & lack thereof market demand however today there are numerous restaurants & stores serving local cuisine based not only on freshness but also quality control measures ensuring your order arrives hot & delicious!!! During the Civil War, Pell City came under siege from Confederate forces for several weeks in early 1862. Despite numerous attacks by Confederate artillery and infantry units, the town remained ultimately unharmed. After the war ended, much of Pell City's commercial infrastructure was destroyed or damaged by Union troops during Reconstruction efforts. However, many residents continued to live in the Town throughout this period; as late as 1970, there were still over 100 residents living within a radius of 10 miles of downtown PellCity! In 1924-1925, Mayor W C Rabkin spearheaded an effort to revive downtown PellCity by purchasing land adjacent to Pット Square (now known as "The Plaza") and developing it into an open-air shopping district called "The Square". This project led to increased business activity in downtown PellCity and helped support local government coffers during difficult times following World War II. In 1961-1963 Samuel Goldwyn purchased controlling interest in Gulfstream International Airways which led to dramatic changes for downtown Pellcity; GIA erected large office towers (the tallest being White Tower) along 1/2 mile wide Main Street which soon became home to some of Alabama's most high profile corporate headquarters - including JB Hunt Tobacco Company (now Reynolds American), Montgomery crushing Machine Shop Co., Inc., Coca Cola Bottling Plant No 2 & Other Coca Cola bottling plants etc... In addition both blocks east on 1st Avenue north were razed & replaced with office buildings occupied largely by public servant agencies such as city hall [New courthouse], firehouses etc... Overall Downtown area now occupies more than 3 acres +/-
