Pell City, Alabama is a small town located in McIntosh County, Alabama. The population was 3,683 at the 2000 census. Pell City is named after General John A. Pell, who served as Commandant of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The history of Pell City begins with settlers arriving in 1827. At that time McIntosh County was part of the Creek Nation and there were no roads or settlements within the present-day town limits. However, by 1830 two settlers had erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in Pell City and began to trade goods with neighbouring families living along the Mobile River. By 1832 a post office had been established in what is now downtown Pell City and by 1833 three stores were open in downtown - all ran by local citizens. In 1835 two more stores were opened: one run by Isaac Hull and another by GEOFFREY EARLWICK JR.. In 1840 three additional stores were opened: one run by JOSEPH CAMPBELL, ONE RUN BY WILLIAM LEWIS & ISAAC HULL AND ONE RUN BY MRS JOHN KENNEDY & HER SON SAMUEL ADAMS (later King). From 1840 until 1861 there was only one store open: that operated by Joshua Campbell; thereafter every other business closed its doors for lack of customers or competition from larger neighbours. During this time many farmers made their homes near downtown Pell City - fields included corn, cotton, soybeans and potatoes - contributing to its typical pioneer atmosphere which centred around farming and social activities such as dances and picnics. Downtown businesses grew steadily throughout the late 19th century until World War I interrupted its growth when much of McIntosh County became Confederate territory following secession from the United States Downtown PellCity experienced some modest growth during World War II as military personnel stationed here produced food for troops stationed elsewhere but growth again slowed after 1945 due to dwindling military spending . After World War II Though most businesses reopened they did not return to their prewar levels of activity until well into 1960s when Interstate 15 bypassed town altogether making it easier for residents to commute to larger cities . Growth resumed slowly throughthe sixties until an influx of new residents led to increased commercial activities during the seventies followed by steady decline during the eighties before finally reaching a low point in 1990s when deficits caused city hall budget cuts which eliminated most cultural programs
