Pell City, Alabama was founded by the Pell family in 1859. The Pell family is from Kentucky and immigrated to Alabama in 1857. The original home of the Pell family was a log cabin on the banks of the Mobile River. In 1865, the Pell family moved to what is now Pell City and built a new home on land that they acquired from John James Marshall. The first mill in Pell City was built by Judge George Hargrave and operated for several years until it were destroyed by fire in 1875. The first post office in Pell City was established in 1876. The town became a part of Bessemer County when it was created from parts of Mobile County in 1907. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to honor General A. P. Hill, who had played an important role in World War I and later served as Assistant Secretary of War under President Woodrow Wilson. In 1925, Pell City began operation of its own water system, which remains operational today. In 1930, Drumphin Manufacturing Company closed its doors after sixty years of business operations within downtown Pell City limits; however, this did not impact downtown development much since most businesses located elsewhere within city limits continued to function successfully during that time period). In 1940, local businessmen formed the Downtown Development Corporation (DDC) with the goal of revitalizing downtown areas including improving public transportation options and creating jobs for locals through various initiatives such as marketing and advertising campaigns targeted at young people living Downtown area; moreover DDC also purchased necessary infrastructure such as streetlights and storm drains so that Downtown could continue to grow without interruption or decline over time- something that has yet to be seen throughout most major urban areas across America due largely to decades-long decision-making processes initiated outside/outsideoftheurbane region).
