It was renamed Pell City on October 5, 1907 after WM Pell, a local rancher who donated land for the town site. When the original town plat was drawn up in 1892 it did not include a park or any public buildings such as a schoolhouse or library; these were added later when the town became more developed and its citizens wanted them to be part of their community identity. Pell City experienced growth during World War II when many residents enlisted in the military and saw service outside of Alabama; this led to new businesses opening up in the area and helped support the local economy until recently when economic recession hit Alabama hard due to global factors such as oil prices dropping and manufacturing moving out of state into Mexico and China. However, recent renovations to downtown have begun to reverse some declines seen by the overall economy in recent years which will help keep Pell City afloat through 2020 while still hosting many cultural attractions that draw tourists from all over; including two casinos which are expected to bring significant economic development over time if they remain open long term!

After years of decline in population and economic activity due to changes in surrounding municipalities, Pell City saw a resurgence beginning in the 2000s that has seen the growth of new businesses and residences." Pell City's history can be traced back to December 17, 1879 when J. H. Pell and his brother-in-law W. C. Smith founded the small farmstead near the current site of Pell University as part of a larger effort to establish agricultural resources for future settlers in what would become Tuscaloosa County.[1] The two men were rewarded for their efforts with land grants from General John Fenton which spanned more than 5 square miles (12 km2). By 1907, however, the area around Pell University had begun to experience rapid development as several large businesses opened up within walking distance of each other: cotton ginners White & White operated out of what is now known as Sixth Street; local grocery store Grocery Outlet Incorporated opened its doors on Tryon Avenue;[2] and truck stop Maxwell's Bus Terminal—later called First National Bank—opened on present day Second Street just east of Main Street.[3][4] TheDeclineofPellCityInPopulationAnd Economic Activity Due To Changes In surroundingsmall municipality began shortly after it lost its village charter on January 1, 1966,[5] but there have been recent successes stories such as first time home buyer Brett Reeves who purchased a threebedroom house at 325 Surname Place from previous owner Floyd McDonald for $2700 in 2006,[6] or restaurateur/cafeteria operator Jeffery Blevins who converted an old machine shop into restaurant A&B Cafe inside existing commerce buildings along Third Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets which he later sold to local hoteliers The Courtyard by Marriott for $225K in 2009.[7][8][9][10] These types of success stories underscore how much work still needs to be done if Pell City wants to maintain its position among Tuscaloosa County's largest communities[11].

Pell City developed as a small farming community with a few dozen residents until World War II when it became the stomping ground of the V-2 rocket program.
