Pell City prospered as a cotton plantation center until World War II when its production declined due to advances in mechanization and other factors such as social changes that affected agriculture throughout much of America during that time period. However, Pell City has regained some prosperity through its TOURIST BUSINESS ENTERPRISE program which offers guided tours including self-guided walks and historical exhibits about local businesses such as mills, churches, schools, residences etc., all open to visitors free of charge every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm since 1978
