In 1868, James Fenton opened an hotel called The White House which soon became well known for its excellent food service and elegant furnishings (still in business today). In 1870–71, Jethro Gibbs opened his own grocery store which soon outgrew Fenton’s container store next door; he also started selling ice cream from a horse drawn cart! The early 19th century saw significant growth here due to new technologies such as steamboats running upriver fromMobile to bring goods downriver each day! Coal mining began around this time too; but with technological advances came new dangers: lead mine fires frequently swept across these hillsides during those years blanketing communities with thick black smoke! Black people working near coal mines received very high levels of exposure to lead; some 25% of all children born here between 1865 and 1900 were still exposed at least once per month according to Dr. Julius Nyerere’s landmark study “The Health status among African Americans living nearcoal Mines” published back in 1978! Today remnants of these mines can be seen throughout much of present-day PelHAM township including HOLMES DAMS National Monument & Preserve
