Pelham is a small town in Alabama located about 25 miles east of Montgomery. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Pelham is known for its rich history and culture which has been preserved through the efforts of its residents and local groups. The town was named after General Samuel Pelham, an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settlement in what is now Pelham Township was made by English settlers in 1794. A post office was established here on October 15, 1821, and remained in operation until October 15, 1903. In 1847, General John Crayton attacked Mobile Bay with 10 warships and 4000 soldiers while under orders from President James K. Polk to attack Spanish Fort on Mobile Bay as a reprisal for Mexico's support of Texas during the Mexican-American War. The attack resulted in many casualties on both sides and did not succeeded in achieving Polk's objective of destroying Mobile Bay defences or seizing Spanish Fort but did cause the death of two senior officers aboard one ship and caused $30 million worth of damage to USS Constitution (1846) alone! One interesting note about this battle is that US Admiral David Dixon Porter ordered his flagship USS Constitution to fire warning shots intoMobile Harbour should gunfire start coming from Spanish Fort; this action helped avoid any accidental civilian casualties! In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Alabama following his successful invasion of Georgia earlier that year. He occupied part ofgomery before being driven back by Union forces led by General Robert E Lee. Aftermath of this campaign saw large numbers more civilians flee into central Alabama than into Tennessee! In 1868 another Confederate attempt to invade Alabama failed when Union troops siege Battle Creek Dam resulting in only 11 Confederate dead compared to over 200 Union dead! In 1871 prominent citizens George Bancroft (an entrepreneur), Wirtz Kinzie (a lawyer), Ebenezer Cobb (a congressman) among others gathered signatures for secession petitions based on deep seated grievances against state government but these petitions were never ratified! These events are generally considered to be the beginning of the end for Reconstruction South America starting with Governor Asbury Johnson’s proclamation “There Is No Negro South” later that year effectively ending racial segregation across all levels within Southeastern states includingAlabama! However despite difficulties with political instability due largely to civil war causes economic stagnation often seen throughout much rural Appalachia began emerging within Southern states leading many farmers/manufacturing workers fleeing towards Northern cities seeking opportunity however some managed to maintain agriculture even as manufacturing shifted away from traditional heavy reliance upon slave labor leaving communities such as Pelham struggling economically ever since Federation? However there have been recent initiatives initiated by Mayor Don Sims which include restoration/repairing downtown area along with new programming focusing on art & music appreciation; both welcome changes given current trends across much rural Appalachia!?
