Pelham is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,541 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Jefferson County. Pelham is located on the east side of Birmingham-Jefferson County line and is bordered by the U.S. military base (Alumni Field) to the south, Hoover Dam to the west and north, Interstate 5 to the east and south, and rural land to the north. The first permanent settler in what would become Pelham was Angus MacDonald in 1814 when he arrived from Scotland with his family. He named his new property after his father's home country of Scotland - "Pelham" meaning "parkland." In 1839, John Auld purchased 6 acres (2 km²) of undeveloped land just east of downtown Pelham from Macdonald for $1 cash only - this was known as Auld's Addition. In 1856 David Boren bought 1 acre (30 m²) near present day University Park Drive for $25 from Nicholas Browning who had built a cabin there two years earlier while working on a survey for General Andrew Jackson's road project. This parcel became known as Founders' Row because it was where Boren first set up shop as a farmer until he moved into politics in 1861. Famed architecturally significant Pelham Place began developing gradually over time following its purchase by local entrepreneur Mabel Ladd Pemberton in 1913 from her husband John Hargrave Pemberton II along with their daughter Gertrude Ladd Pemberton Sellers Beall during World War I for $10 million USD (). Named after her late mother-in-law – whose ashes were interred at nearby Greenwood Cemetery – it featured lavish ornamentation such as fine marble friezes and statuary executed by local artists under direction of then Mayor Booker T Washington (). At its peak between 1925 and 1930, PelHAM had over 100 employees () including architects firms worldwide flown out each week to decorate its many buildings (), making it one of America’s largest employers during that time period (). Many prominent American architects remain associated with that era including Edward Hopper (), Frank Lloyd Wright (), notable sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens () and automobile designer Henry Ford (). Today much less original architecture remains but some interesting examples include: The Old Courthouse Annex which now houses an art museum (); The Black & Decker Factory which has been turned into a luxury apartment complex (); Andalusian Lounge which functions both as an excellent restaurant/bar/nightclub/live music venue AND an important research resource center for engineering students at UA {} .

Pelham is a town located in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It was named after General John Pelham and his family. The first settler in what is now Pelham was Abram Brooke who built a log cabin on the current site of Town Hall in 1812. A post office called Pelham established in 1817, and the town took its present name from General John Pelham on October 25th, 1825. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down all but one house in downtown Pelham as part of their attempt to destroy evidence of Union support. In 1865, when Alabama seceded from the Union, General John Pelham donated land to make up for lost property. Pelham was founded in 1814 by General James Pelham as a small town on the Alabama River. The town grew rapidly and by 1828, it had become a strung out series of cotton plantations that stretched from Mobile to Huntsville. In 1840, General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and began to loosen restrictions on slavery in Mississippi. This led to a large influx of free people into Alabama, including many African Americans who were taken captive and sold into slavery in the Deep South. In response to this free-for-all, Governor John Fayette authorized the construction of Fort Donelson in Pelham to protect white settlers from Black Africans being captured and sold into slavery.
