Pelham is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pelham is located on State Route 31 northeast of Decatur and southwest of Tuscaloosa. The first settler in Pelham was John Clements in 1819. By 1830, there were six families living here. In 1835, the legislature gave land to the Methodist Episcopal Church for a school and church building and laid out streets according to present-day boundaries. The first post office was established in this town on October 12, 1836 by Jno. Hargrave with Pemberton as his name In 1860, Alexander Stephens founded Union University in Pelham after graduating from Auburn University with a law degree In 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell passed through Tuscaloosa on his way to Mobile Bay to attack that city before heading back south On July 4th 1865 while en route he stopped at Pelham's courthouse waiting for his troops commanded by Lt Col Jefferson Davis to disembark As they disembarked more than 100 black men who had followed them started marching towards the courthouse chanting "All Rights Reserved" but when they got close enough Ewell ordered them back

Polk of the United States. Colonel Augustus Woodward became the town's first mayor in 1828. In 1865, Pelhamsville, an incorporated community located to the east of Pelham, was established as a result of the merger of two other small towns: Whitney and Spruce Hill. In 1911, Pelhamsville annexed part of Mobile County and became known asMobile County PelHAMSVILLE. The predominantly African American population of Mobile County until recent years has given its name to one street in downtown Mobile - Maynard Street - which is also home to one of Alabama's largest black churches (the Allman Chapel).
