The first white settler to arrive in Pelham was James Whitehurst on November 5, 1871. Whites had been driven out of Mobile Bay by Tecumseh and other Creek Indians during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When the war ended and Reconstruction came into effect following the end of slavery in 1865, many African Americans were re-established in areas formerly occupied by white people. One such area was within present day Pelham limits where General John A. On October 3rd, 1871 General John A., son of Confederate general Braxton Bragg announced that he would be moving his family from Corinth, Mississippi overland to Alabama so they could join him there when he took command of Union forces opposing Federal troops throughout most or all south central Alabama including nearby Tuscaloosa and Decatur Counties which now make up Muskegon Heights Township adjacent to today's city of Birmingham proper with its own post office called "Pelham" established January 1st 1872 northwest corner intersection First Street/Highway 9 north side School Road just west side Russell Shoals damsite road original Grant County seat moved here July 17th 1870 from Enterprise .
