Pelham is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. It was incorporated on February 15, 1819, and named for General James H. Pelham who had served in the American Revolution and the Civil War. The population of Pelham was 3,564 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Pelham was established on July 14, 1824. The present one was built on December 5, 1909 by Wm Fenton. The town plat was filed on January 10, 1908. Pelham has a two-story school annex which opened in 1928 and seats about 100 students grades kindergarten through eighth grade. A new high school building is being planned that will seat 1,500 students grades 9th through 12th grade when it is finished next year. The town also has a library with about 350 books and an uproar room where citizens can gather to discuss local news or ask questions from the law enforcement officials during emergencies or protests
