A post office called Grissom was established in 1819, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. As early as 1813, there had been proposals to rename PelHAM "Birmingham" because of its strategic location between Huntsville and Montgomery (the capital of Alabama). However, this proposal never gained acceptance among the local citizens because they felt that Birmingham would be more likely to become an English-speaking center if it did so than their own town which they saw as primarily Americanized Creek Indian heritage with no connection to their original culture or geography
