The Pelham gun slings company was founded in 1903 by Captain John W. Stephens and his brother-in-law, Colonel J.D. Smith, Jr. The Stephens brothers were the first to produce a firearms sling in Pelham. From this small start, the company grew and produced a wide variety of sling types and sizes for use with rifles and shotguns. In 1916, Captain Stephens died suddenly after a long battle with tuberculosis; his son-in-law, John D. Smith III, took over production of the slings until his death in 1961. The company continued to be run by their descendants until it was sold to E & K Manufacturing Company in 1965. Thereafter, the Pelham Gun Slings Company operated as an offshoot of E&K Manufacturing Company until it went out of business in 1984.
