Pelham is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pelham has been home to many notable people and events over the years, such as its incorporation into the Union County seat in 1871, when it was one of three towns in that county. In 1924, Pelham became an incorporated city after a referendum passed by the community's residents. The first settler in what is now Pelham Township was James Hickey who arrived on horseback from Tennessee in 1798 and named his land "Hockeyshaw". He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River and made some cornbread crops for himself and his family. A short time later, Hugh McGee came across Hickey's land and started building log cabins on what is now McGee Road about two miles east of present day Pelhamtown. In 1800 John Swanton settled near modern day downtown Huntsville with his wife Catherine (born 1796) and their infant son Nicholas (named for Nicholas Swanton who had died while serving with distinction during the American Revolutionary War). By 1802 there were twelve families living within a few hundred yards of each other near where I-565 converges with US 16 today. In 1821 Solomon Burton purchased 1/4 mile east of present day Swanton Ferry road from James Biddle for $10 per acre (the price at which properties could be bought back then). After being elected sheriff of Union County in 1830 Solomon Burton decided to move his operations west to what would become Pelham township; he sold most of his holdings including 1/4 mile east of present day Swanton Ferry road to John Brockman in 1833 for $500 per lot! When Isaac Fenton moved from Athens, Georgia to start trading post on this same site in 1835 he called it "Fenton's Station" because he had acquired alluvial soil nearby which wouldlater become known as "PelHAM". When Jonathan Minton built his millrace just south of downtown Huntsville about 1840 he may have been one of the first settlers to clear cut timber along current creek bed between SW corner 3rd St Nw & SW corner 4th St Nw – incidentally looking out onto Creek Rd today! Some early buildings still standing are Old Minton House (1840), Mills Store (1841), Blacksmith Shop (c 1830s), Masonic Temple No 2 Built c 1840 – currently used as storage by Verizon Wireless Incorporated (1990s) & derelict since then (& once again visible from main street side 2009) & around NW corner First Baptist Church Built c 1830 – also remains standing (& viewable from main street side 2009) Closter Methodist Episcopal Church Built c 1860 - Currently Used As A Public School Middle School Of Yesteryear & See historic photo below First Baptist Church still Standing Today although not operational but you can access interior via basement walkway There’s also An Early 20th Century Factory Style Diner inside First Baptist church That Appears To Be Abandoned At This Time On November 13th 1861 Montgomery Advertiser reported: “A petition has lately been presented by Rev J C Berry asking arrangements should be made among citizens thereof for erecting a school house therein . . . The Committee appointed to investigate said matter found that sufficient funds do not exist at this time either raised or available for any purpose proposed” so no action was taken upon this request either way! It wasn't until after General Robert E Sumner's April 1865 march through central Alabama that pelham began receiving attention as a stopover enroute to Mobile Bayou City Limits where General Sherman was goingto meet Governor George Wallace following Rebuilding Efforts leading upstart Reconstruction efforts throughout Alabama& Gulf Coast states - thus giving pelham an official status as an incorporated city! One resident who lived close enough to experience these days is Dr Jesse Owens who attended high school here starting around 1942 until 1944 when he joined United States Naval Academy preparatory classes at Annapolis Junction before enrolling full time at Tuskegee University Law School! Upon graduation from law school Mr Owens became an assistant attorney general working under Attorney General Harlan Stone duringnational liberation struggle against World War II prior to founding African American Legal Defense Fund alongside future U S Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall… Mr Owens returned home permanentlyEffective January 1971 & resided here until death on December 15th 1991 having served our great state proudly

The name comes from one of the first settlers in the area and he named it after his father's home village in England. Pelham was founded in 1821 by General James Wilkinson. The town is named for him. A post office was established here in 1825 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. In 1827, the first courthouse was built here. The town growth slowed during the 1830s due to a lack of eligible land and an inability to finden settlers. However, a new courthouse and jail were erected in 1840 and 1848 respectively, which helped spur continued growth. The town's population reached 4,000 by 1860 but began to decline thereafter, reaching 1,500 by 1880. Pelham experienced another decline during the 1890s as a result of increased competition from nearby Mobile and Huntsville. Its population peaked at 5,000 in 1930 but declined again after that point due to increasing industrialization and technology advances. It has since fallen back to around 1,500 residents today
