Pelham, Alabama is a city of over 50,000 people located in the northeast corner of the state of Alabama. The population was reported as 36,813 at the 2010 census. It has been known for its gun lubrication history, which began with an early firearms dealer named George W. Winchester in 1892. Winchester brought his new shop to Pelham after moving from Newburyport, Massachusetts. From then until World War II, Pelham was home to several ammunition manufacturers and their employees who would use the nearby Arsenal National Military Park for storage and testing purposes. In 1945 Presley Gee purchased arsenal property in Pelham and made it into a military base that served as the home of Gun Lube Supply Co., now part of Brownells Incorporated. The store continued operations until 1965 when it closed its doors forever due to financial difficulties. Pelham, Alabama is a town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. The population was 8,876 at the 2010 census. Pelham is located at 36°09′21″N 82°02′39″W. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first resident of Pelham was Wm. Denton in 1819. In 1828 the town was platted and named for General John Pemberton because he had stationed his forces there during the American Revolution. The town rapidly grew and by 1850 it had a population of 993 people. In 1871 Pelham incorporated as a city with a population of 3,010 people. By 1900 Pelham's population had increased to 11,021 residents and by 1910 it reached 12,567 citizens. On October 1st, 1920 Pelham became one of five cities in Sumter County that joined together to form the new Birmingham–Jefferson County metropolitan area under then-Governor George Wallace's administration as part of what is known as "Operation Spiral". During World War II several large industries were built in Pelham including Allis-Chalmers Rubber Company (now Goodyear) and Textron Corporation (now GEICO). After the war many businesses closed but others such as Allis-Chalmers Rubber Company re-opened and prospered through the remainder of the 20th century until they went out of business in 2001.. In later years other major employers included Meineke Carpet & Flooring Co., Tyson Foods Inc., Searle Polymer Industries Inc., JBL Audio/Video products company and Halliburton Energy Services LLC among others In recent years there has been strong investment into retail development especially near Interstate 10 which has led to an increase in jobsites within town limits along with new bars and restaurants opening up around downtown
