Pelham is a small town in Alabama, located within the Pelham-Madison County region. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. The land that now makes up Pelham was first settled by white Americans in the 1820s. In 1837, Robert Pelham donated 640 acres of land to the town of Madison for $100. The town plat was filed on October 12, 1840. In 1846, John Wesley Hardin and his brother James built a log cabin in what is now downtown Pelham. They named their new settlement "PelHAM" after their father's plantation near Mobile, Alabama which they had visited as children. The first post office opened in PelHAM on November 3, 1850. The first settler to reside in PelHAM was Isaac Maddox who arrived on May 20th of that year from Huntsville with his family. From this initial group of settlers there grew into an incorporated village with a population of over 100 people by 1860 according to the US Census Bureau's "Statistical Abstract of Alabama". This growth continued through the years until 1903 when it reached its present size with 829 residents living within a square mile radius around downtown and outlying areas such as East Main Street and West Main Street (now Old Hammond Road). This area included most of what is now east side of downtown and much of west side including today’s University Center Drive and Myrick Avenue. In 1903 Wacoaland Methodist Episcopal Church Complex became home to our current municipal building which remains one of only two buildings remaining standing from that era - also known as “the old schoolhouse” due to its original use as a public school during that time period before becoming Municipal Headquarters starting in 1959!

Pelham is a town in Monroe County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1795 and named for General James Wilkinson, who had been appointed governor of Northwest Georgia by the British Crown. The first post office in Pelham was established in 1801 and remained open until it was discontinued by mail on February 28, 1865. In 1836, Andrew Jackson visited Pelham while attending Wayland Baptist College and recommended that the college move to Pelham from Mobile because of its location near Cahaba River. The college moved to Pelham in 1837 and remain there ever since. The first school in Pelham opened in 1827 and remain open until it closed on May 6th, 1928 due to financial difficulties. It reopened on January 3rd 1929 after being bought by Mrs. Lillian Gwynn fromMobile School District No 2 which had closed down two years earlier due to budget cuts caused by the Great Depression. Mrs Gwynn renamed it First Methodist Episcopal School which remains operational today as First Methodist Episcopal Church (Pelham). In 1947-48, a group of local businessmen formed an organization called the "Alabama Industrial Development Council" with the goal of creating jobs within Alabama's growing aluminum industry; this led to the establishment of Alcoa's original aluminum smelter at Pelham in 1948. Today Alcoa continues production at this plant - primarily using recycled aluminum drums from other plants around Alabama- making it one of only a few plants left worldwide that uses recycled materials for mining purposes! The current mayor is Bobby Gilbert who took office on January 1st 2019
