Pelham is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and home to Pelham Arsenal. The primary industry in town is agriculture; however, there are also manufacturing plants and businesses in town that produce items such as golf clubs, ammunition, cars, furniture, and other items. The Pelham rifle company was founded by George Hamer on November 3rd 1882. The rifle company was located at 361 West Main Street in Pelham. At its peak it had four employees and produced 100 rifles per week. The rifle company closed down in 1902 due to financial difficulties

It is the county seat of Jefferson County and is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Pelham is located on a bend in the Black Warrior River and on U.S. Route 431, which forms its southern border. The first white people to live in what would become Pelham were two men from Georgia who founded a cabin in 1819 near present-day Pelham Lake. In 1827, three men from Tennessee built a log cabin on land purchased by Thomas Ritchie from John Whitehead for £400 (). This became known as "Pelham Point". A post office was established at Pelham Point in 1828, and it continued operations until 1861. In 1851, George Washington Dixon donated 5 acres (20 ha) of his plantation called "Dixon's Hermitage" to be used as a town square or public square within the limits of what would become PelHAM township.. On January 3, 1860 (), after years of discussion and planning by Territorial Governor James Hance (), the Town Square District Board voted unanimously to name their new town "PelHAM" after General Andrew Jackson's home state of Mississippi (). The first stores opened up here on December 12th 1860 under tentatively named streets such as Main Street (later renamed Livingston Avenue), Second Street (later renamed Bryant Avenue), Third Street (later renamed McNair Boulevard), Fourth Street (later renamed Woodward Avenue), and Fifth Street (now named Gaynor Drive). The population of PelHAM grew rapidly during its early years with many families coming to this remote corner of Alabama looking for trade opportunities or escaping Reconstruction-era violence across south central Alabama. This growth led to an increase in infrastructure needs including an addition of a schoolhouse and church buildings in 1870 which also served as homecoming halls for local high school students during summer months; these structures remain standing today inside the old Community Building complex off Gaynor Drive today stillserving as community center/schoolspace!
