By 1830, Pelham had become an important center of cotton production in Alabama. The town's growth continued until the late 19th century when it lost its importance to developing cities such as Birmingham and Huntsville. In 1895, General John Pelham died and his son-in-law became owner of the town site and developed it into a resort town with casinos and other tourist attractions which kept the community alive until 1970s when it declined again due to lower demand for tourism in that region
