Pelham, Alabama is home to the oldest continuous white settlement in Alabama, and the city has been a popular tourist destination since the early 1800s. The city's rich history comes from its location on the Pelham Peninsula, where three ancient settlements were located: Alba minor, Pelham major, and Pascagoula. The area was first hunted by Paleo-Indian and Mesoamerican cultures before European explorers arrived in what is now Alabama in the mid-1700s. By 1819, English settlers had established a small town named Poston on the peninsula. After being destroyed by a fire in 1824, Poston was rebuilt as Pelham. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson decided to move his army across Alabama into Georgia after experiencing fierce Indian resistance during his campaign against John Fritchey for Governor of Mississippi. The U.S. Army built Fort Gaines near present day Pelham to house its troops during this time period; a plaque marking the fort's location can be found at nearby Patton Park. As part of post-Civil War Reconstruction efforts following the end of slavery in America, Pelham became known as one of the most black towns in America due to its large African American population at that time. Over time, however, African Americans gradually stopped living within walking distance of downtown Pelham and moved out into other parts of town while white residents continued to dominate business and political life throughout much of this period. In 1978, mayor Gaylord Nelson ordered all businesses closed Friday night so that city employees could take advantage of local resources during weekend open enrollment for public school students inAlabama; this event is still celebrated annually as Mayor Nelson's Night Out In recent years, progress has been made towards ensuring that everyone who lives within walking distance of downtown PelHAM enjoys equal access to education opportunities regardless of race or ethnicity; an initiative called Downtown Live! allows residents aged 3–18 years old to enjoy free admission from 6 p.m.–midnight every weekday except holidays during school year 2016/2017 through 2021/22 inclusive; this program also provides programming such as art classes and nature walks throughout downtown each weeknight Despite these advances over recent decades - many issues remain unresolved around race and privilege when it comes to education and access to downtown PelHAM services for everyone including young people living within walking distance - including increasing rates of crime both inside and outside our boundaries So what are we doing about it? Well some things have already happened like being able to bring your own water bottle without havingto buy any from store or if you're caught with it then you get fined but overall I think more needs to be done especially because sometimes people just don't understand why certain things are happening or they see something that doesn't seem fair but ultimately power alwaysbiased against certain groups even though there should be no reason why not

Pelham founded and developed the town on land he had bought from the Creek people who had been living in and around his previous home of Pickensville. The first post office was established in 1824; it was renamed Pelham in 1875 after John C. Pelham's death. Located on the Tennessee River near its confluence with Mobile Bay, Pelham quickly became an important commercial center for river transportation and points south due to its location on what would become a very important route for trade during the antebellum period: The Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers served as both routes connecting Nashville with Memphis and Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans; Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Jacksonville Beach, Florida; Key West (then called Spanish Fort) on Cuba;and Stonington (later Hartford) Connecticut. By 1836-1837 there were more than 20 businesses active in Pelham In 1865-1867 Posey's Expedition against Mobile Bay led by General Andrew Jackson landed at Gadsden Landing to capture Mobile Bay Bridge which linked Pensacola with Tampa Bay - this event helped spur development along SR 166 through downtown Gadsden towards that area now known as OldTownMobile
