Pelham, Alabama is known as the " Arsenal of the South" because it has been in business since 1814. Ammunition production started here in 1814 and has continued ever since. Today, Pelham produces over 1 million rounds of ammunition per day. The arsenal was founded by Captain John Sevier who purchased property along Mobile Bay for this purpose. In 1846, General Robert E. Lee used the arsenal to produce munitions for his army during the Battle of Appomattox Court House. Pelham is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. The community of Pelham was founded in 1847 by white men from Georgia. It was named for General James Pemberton, who commanded American forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg made Pelham his headquarters after he crossed the Alabama River into Texas to fight against Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. When Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina on April 12, 1861, Bragg recommended to his commanders that they move their headquarters from Mobile to Pelham so they could better defend the city if it were captured by Union troops. After Sumter's capture and its fall within days of its installation as an artillery emplacement near Selma, Alabama—a strategic location between Mobile and Charleston—the Confederate army moved its command center to Pelham on May 1, 1861. After secession of America from Great Britain on February 14th, 1861,—just one day before pelham's incorporation as a town,—PelHAM citizens voted (by referendum) to become part of the new Confederacy with a population of only 498 residents out of a total population of 7K+ at that time In 1865-1866 local blacksmiths/gunsmiths produced over 10k rounds per day for military use for both sides totaling about 300k rounds expended in just 8 months period
Pelham is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa–Hoover metropolitan area. Pelham's history dates back to 1819 when it was named for General Andrew Jackson Pelham during the War of 1812. In 1903, Pelham became a city and has since grown dramatically with its population reaching over 20,000 as of 2019. The first permanent settler in what would become PelHAM was James Crouch in 1819. He and his family were traders on the Mobile River and built their first log cabin near present day Springdale Road and West Mountain Lane. James Crouch's son John married Hetty Carrington in 1829 and they started growing cotton on their farm which became known as "Crouch Manor." They also raised chickens until 1830 when they moved to what is now Old Hill Road where they founded what would become known as Clearwater Methodist Episcopal Church (now First Baptist Church). In 1903, by order of President Theodore Roosevelt, the citizens of Birmingham elected Mayor Arthur Ashe to lead them through an urban renewal project that aimed to clean up downtown businesses and make way for new shopping centers and office parks. This event helpedto rename downtown PelHAM after Arthur Ashe – giving birth to one of PelHAM’s most famous landmarks: The Arthur Ashe Municipal Building (now City Hall)

Pelham is a small town in north Alabama, United States. The population was 2,143 at the 2010 census. The town is located in Jefferson County and is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Pelham is named after General William Tecumseh Sherman's father-in-law, John Pelham. The first settlers to Pelham were Methodists who arrived in 1827. In 1840, nine local men founded the village of Pelham on land that had been donated by Runnymede Plantation owner Isaac Newton Sims. In 1843, a post office was established at Pelham with Wm. Hodge as the first postmaster. In 1865, Henry Clay Nooney opened a general store in what became known as "Nooney's Corner." By 1870, there were 10 stores in Pelham with John Pemberton opening his own grocery store in 1871 and Elisha Peake selling bread and groceries from his bakery soon afterwards. The first street in town was called Liberty Avenue and was only wide enough for one carriage per direction! A later street extension allowed for two cars to cross at each intersection! A school was built near the junction of Liberty Avenue and Center Street in 1868 which quickly became very popular because it offered education for all children living within walking distance from it! A sawmill operated by Jno Pemberton began operations along with a flour mill on November 11th, 1888 which made pellets out of cornmeal dough using an old hand grinder that Mr. Pemberton had purchased from an Englishman who had emigrated to America some years earlier! This gave birth to what would become known as "Pelham Mills" manufacturing various items such as air conditioners, refrigerators and dishwashers until they closed their doors around 1990s when them went out of business too! In 1903-1904 Mrs Wm Hodge erected her home upon donation from Mrs Fannie Hodges (Daughter of Elijah Hodges). Named "Hodge House," this two story brick house served as both her husband's residence & family dining room until she died suddenly less than two months after its erection; age 80 years old at the time. It now resides within Heritage Park Historical District boundaries where you can visit it today! Mrs Hodge & her husband lived across the street from each other inside their plantation style home until he passed away suddenly just prior to her death... Now THAT'S dedication!!!

They named their new community after the former seat of government for the Creek Nation, which they managed from their home on the Chattahoochee River. In 1814, Pelham became one of three cities in Alabama designated to receive a grant from President James K. Polk as part of the Reconstruction Era efforts to improve education and economic opportunities for African Americans. The city's growth continued during the 20th century, with a population of over 100,000 by 1960. In recent years, Pelham has seen some decline in popularity due to its location within easy driving distance of Birmingham and other major metropolitan areas.
