Ozark is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. Ozark was founded in 1836 and named for the Ozarks in Missouri. The population was 4,818 as of the 2010 census. The town is located on the east bank of the Flint River. The first settler in what is now Ozark was John Wolfe who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky with his family. He built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the river and enjoyed fishing and hunting opportunities that he developed into one of the leading businesses in early Ozark. Other early settlers were James Coker, David Hinton, Elias Pritchard, Samuel Morse and others. In 1881, George Witherspoon established a sawmill at Indianola Falls downstream from where Ozark now stands. This mill became one of Marshall County's most important economic engines during its early years; it produced lumber, flour and other goods until it went out of business around 1930. Witherspoon also operated a gristmill hereabouts until his death in 1906). Ozark experienced significant growth following World War II when many families moved to Ozarksfrom smaller towns around Marshall County because of wartime shortages of food supplies and housing developments elsewhere within the county didn't NCAA football tickets available yet so they had to make do with farming or gardening instead which they found more profitable options given their proximity to major cities like Birmingham (the largest city then) and Decatur (the second largest city). In 1836, when the Missouri Compromise was passed and the Slaveholding States were allowed to keep their slaves, Ozark County, Alabama was one of them. The county seat of Ozark was at Lufkin, but it soon became apparent that there were not enough people in the area to support a courthouse and jail. So in 1840, a small school house was built on the corner of Church and Main Streets in Lufkin. It served as a courthouse until 1848, when a larger building was constructed at what is now known as Clearwater. The first justice of the peace for Ozark County was John Denton. The population of Ozark reached 2,000 by 1860; however, by 1870 it had decreased to 1,800 because of an exodus of farmers to Arkansas due to railroad construction. In 1871-72 there were some skirmishes between Confederate troops and Union forces during the American Civil War; however no major battles took place in or around Ozark County. After the war ended in 1865, much progress had been made within both Alabama and Arkansas thanks to Reconstruction policies implemented by President Abraham Lincoln. However many African Americans still faced discrimination throughout most of America because they were considered property instead of human beings with rights like other citizens. This led to several uprisings across America during this time period known as The Black Revolution which failed miserably because African Americans lacked political power and representation on Ulysses S Grant's administration. However despite these failures there are several accomplishments that can be mentioned about Ozark during this time such as developing an early form of electricity (an early gaslight system also developed), being home to one of the first black churches in America (the Methodist Episcopal Zion Church located on State Street), becoming an important stop on stagecoaches traveling through central Arkansas during the 19th century,[4] its own cotton gin complex being built near present day Birmingham,[5][6] oil production beginning shortly afterwards,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]and rapidly becoming one of central Alabama's most prosperous counties.[15][16][17](See table below.)
