Ozark, Alabama is a small town located in the Ozarks of southeastern Missouri. The population was 6,898 at the 2000 census. The area that makes up Ozark is about 350 square miles and includes parts of Randolph County and St. Francois County. The history of Ozark begins with the Cherokee Indians who were the first to settle hereabouts in 1819. They built their homes on high ground overlooking a small stream called Bywater Creek. The Cherokees were forced out by Indian Wars in 1846-48, but they continued to live here until they left in 1861 when they ceded this territory to the United States. In 1865, General William T Sherman marched his army through this area towards Springfield, Missouri after driving the Confederate forces out of central Missouri. He stopped at Bywater Creek where he ordered his troops toation (a type of cooking fire) prepared for their dinner while he went into nearby Arkadelphia for supplies. Later that night, he discovered that some men from Arkansas had moved into Bywater Creek and started cooking food on top of his military campsites! This embarrassed General Sherman so much that he disbanded his army and returned home before reaching Springfield. The town began as a small settlement around 1880 named Johnsonville after JonasJohnson, an early settler who helped organize Randolph County's first election in 1881. Johnsonville quickly grew into a busy farming community with schools and churches serving the local population; it also became known for its dry goods store which operated until 1903. In 1907, Ozark voters passed a resolution annexing Randolph County to form what would become Ozark Township; it was named after Captain John Worthy O'Neal who served as Mayor from 1901-1905 and again from 1909-1911). On November 2nd, 1907, Captain O'Neal donated land comprising most of present day Buchanan Heights neighborhood to create what would eventually become Ozark's first park - Parkland Park which now occupies most of Center Point Boulevard between North River Drive and North River Road inside downtown ozark

In 1940, Ozark was designated as an official U.S. Census metropolitan statistical area (CSA). Today, Ozark is one of the most economically prosperous locations in Alabama with a strong economy that revolves around manufacturing, trade, service sector jobs, and tourism.
