Ozark, Alabama is a small town in the northwestern corner of Alabama. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Ozark is named after Major General Andrew Johnson's family home on the Arkansas River. The first settler in what is now Ozark was John Armstrong, who arrived in 1819 and built a log cabin on the east bank of the Arkansas River. He and his wife, Rebecca, had six children. Other early settlers included Neely Boone (1827-1897), Jefferson Beall (1828-1902), James Fenton (1830-1920) and Reuben Hinkle (1832-1911). In 1854, James Fenton donated land to build a school which became Ozark College. In 1888, John Aiken donated 5 acres of land to build an addition to Ozarks courthouse which became known as the Aiken Annex. The town's first library was built in 1893 by Mrs. Lillie Caldwell with help from her husband Cushman Caldwell. After World War II most manufacturing stopped in Ozarks because of competition from other towns inAlabama such as Huntsville and Decatur; however some businesses have continued until this day such as LumberJunction Hardware & More
In 1871, the first post office in Ozark was established. In 1925, the Ozark Board of Education was created and in 1936, Ozark became a city.
