Ozark, Alabama is a small town in the Ozark Mountains of central Alabama. It is located about east of Huntsville and west of Tuscaloosa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,824. The town was founded in 1871 by John Fournier and others who came to Williamson County from Tennessee. The first store in Ozark was built on what is now Main Street. The community grew rapidly and by 1893 had a school, a post office, two churches, three stores, four blacksmiths and twenty-one farmers. In 1907 the county seat was moved to Huntsville but Ozark continued to grow steadily until it gained its own government in 1917 when it became a city under the name of Ozark. In 1930 Ozark annexed part of the town of Eutaw Springs which had been abandoned since 1920 because of floods caused by hurricanes Floyd and Ike. By then most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Alabama or Kentucky due to economic depression brought on by World War II. However, some people returned over time as businesses reopened or new families arrived in the area after moving away during prohibition years (1920-1933). Today many descendants live in Ozark including those who founded Eutaw Springs although much has changed there since they were last there:
