Ammunition history in Ozark, Alabama began with the founding of the city in 1881 by W.H. Wiley and others. The early ammunition dealers in Ozark were G.W. Hennig and S.E. Godfrey, who developed a business importing various types of ammunition from Europe for use in their farm equipment and other products. The first shot heard in Ozark was fired on December 12, 1881 when two farmers from Illinois shot at a deer near the town limits. The first official explosion happened on July 1, 1882 when three men detonated an exploding cottonseed battery at a local mill. This event marked the beginning of ammunition production in Ozark and also served as the first victory for the new town’s gun club over neighboring Lakinburg! In 1902, JT Armour & Sons moved to Ozark from Chicago with their famous revolver factory producing revolvers under several different names including “6-shooter”, “Ozark Shield” and eventually just “Armour”! In 1907 they built a plant adjacent to their old factory that continued until 1930! In 1927 Armor produced its last product – lead-time bullets for rifles – at this facility! After World War II ended there was little demand for munitions in Alabama so many companies lefttown or closed down completely; however some notable Ammo manufacturers that have continued to operate into present day include: Winchester Repeating Arms Company (now known as Winchester), Brownells firearms company (now part of Magpul), Remington Arms Company (now headquartered out of Oregon), Savage Arms Corporation and finally Hornady Manufacturing Company which is now part of Sigarms AG!

A post office was established at Ozark in 1821, and it remained in operation until 1959. The town was incorporated as a municipality in 1907. Ozark's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its earliest days. Today, its primary industry is coal mining; however, other significant sectors include lumbering and manufacturing. Ozark also contains a number of retail businesses and services including two grocery stores and two strip malls. Ozarks history can be traced back to 1821 when white settlers began purchasing land east of Marshall Countyline with the goal of developing it into an agricultural center for southern Alabama. Coalmining played an important role in this early development; during World War II Ozark produced more than 1 million tons of coal used by military installations all around the world.
