Ozark, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. Ozark is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern edge of Marshall County and northeast of Decatur. The area that now Ozark was first settled in 1819 by General James Wilkinson and his brother-in-law Colonel John Troup as Wilkinson's domain east of Mobile Bay. In 1828, Wilkinson sold this land to Jeremiah Dixon for $2,500 cash. The town site was laid out in 1829 by Jonathan Easley on land donated by Valentine Denny. Dixon renamed the community "Ozark" after his farm near nearby Mount Carmel which he had acquired from David Gadsden when Gadsden became governor ofAlabama in 1827. A post office called Ozark was established in 1830, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. After Federal troops burned Uniontown during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Confederate forces moved into the area and founded a new settlement called "Tuscaloosa" on February 14, 1865; however, this name also failed to stick and it reverted back to Ozark upon its establishment as a town by state law on May 1, 1865. On October 10 & 11 1916 local farmers met at Main Street Methodist Church to form an Agricultural Society with Jno Wiles as president; they leased their meeting house (now known as Park Avenue Baptist Church) for use as a schoolhouse while they erected barns & other buildings around it; later meetings were held at various locations including First Presbyterian Church (now University Drive), Old Hickory House (now White Hall School), Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel (now Park Avenue Baptist Church), Village Green residence built about 1930 for Drs James Hinton & others who served there during WWI (& World War II) vernacular schools sprang up all over central Alabama teaching kids how to raised crops etc.; these days we see many kids walking or biking to class downtown every day
